May Allah's ﷻ peace and blessings be upon Prophet Hadrat Lot عَلَيْهِ ٱلصَّلَاةُ وَٱلسَّلَامُ -
From the Qasas Al-Anbiya series, our topic today is based on the blessed life of Prophet Lot and the upcoming article will be based on Prophet Jacob's PBUH life.
Prophet Lot is the nephew of Prophet Abraham. Prophet Lot was the first who believed in Prophet Abraham and support him. The Prophet Lot emigrated from Palestine with the Prophet Abraham to Babylon and Iraq and then returned to Palestine. Once the Romans had taken Prophet Lot captive, Prophet Abraham fought the Romans and freed Prophet Lot. Prophet Lot was sent as a prophet and a messenger of Allah for the 5 cities:
Sodom Gomorrah, Edom, Amod and Za'arar. these cities were located in Jordan. Each city had a population of over 1 hundred thousand and each person had a weapon. These were the most developed nations of their time. These people were intoxicated with their power and progress and became arrogant and conceited. They were bold and courageous in committing sins.
The nation of Prophet Lot was plagued with Homosexuality, Idolatry, Murder, Mischief, Looting, Drinking, Miscoducting, Gambling, Pornography, Adultery, Immorality, Harassment of travelers and all kind of sins. Seeing their evil deeds, the Prophet Lot rebuked them and warned them of the torment of Allah and even the prophet Lot did every possible effort but the rebellious nation never obeyed Allah and his Prophet.
Rather, he would say very frankly, O Lot! You frighten us with torment, if you are truthful then bring torment for us. Therefore, because of the rebellion and disobedience of his people, the Prophet of Allah Hadrat Lot cursed against them. Allah sent three angels to them in the form of three young men, As you read earlier in the post of Prophet Ibrahim, before going to the Prophet Lot and his nation, those angels went to Prophet Ibrahim.
They told Prophet Abraham the reason for their arrival on earth and said: We are sent to torment the people of Prophet Lot and give you the gospel of the birth of your son Ishaq. Therefore, when these angels reached the settlement of Prophet Lot in Sodom, Prophet Lot was not at home. Rather, they were engaged in their farming. When the people of the Prophet Lot saw those young men near his house, they came running.
Meanwhile, Hazrat Lot also reached the house and met the young men. Prophet Lot found out that these are very bright-faced and well-mannered young men so Prophet Lot was afraid of the bad habits of his nation. One of them, (Who was Angel Gabriel) said that you should not be afraid, this nation of yours cannot harm us at all, we are angels, and we have brought torment of Allah on them.
Since Prophet Lot's wife belonged to the nation, she informed his people about all the circumstances. But Prophet Lot was now very satisfied. So when the people of the settlement tried to enter by crowding in the house of Prophet Lot, Angel Gabriel hit them with his wing, by which, their faces have changed, their eyes began to disappear even their faces became flat and everyone began to scream.
They began to run away from the house of Prophet Lot and began to say, Lot's great sorcerers have come here today and they cast a spell on us. So when all the people ran away from the Prophet Lot's house, Gabriel said to the Prophet Lot: Take your family away from this town, now at the same time. But do not let your wife know about this, for she has told her people about you & don't look back because you won't be able to see this horrible torment.
So the Prophet Lot left his settlement with his family (there were 14 members in the family of Prophet Lot) at dawn. Then the first torment that Allah sent down on the nation of Prophet Lot was the rain of stones from the sky. and then the command came from Allah. Angel Gabriel uprooted the cities from the earth and took them to a height above the sky and threw them on the ground.
According to a hadith, one day our Holy Prophet said to Angel Gabriel: O Jibreel, evaluate your power. Gabriel replied: When I was sent to torment the people of Prophet Lot. I uprooted their city Sodom from the very bottom of the earth. The population of the city was 4 hundred thousand. I uprooted this city and took it on my wing and carried it to such heights in the sky that their cries could be heard as far as the heavens. Then I turned this city upside down on the earth.
It was the city of Sodom, with a population of over four hundred thousand. So Angel Gabriel took these cities to such heights that the sounds of the chickens and dogs of these cities could be heard up to the sky. Each stone that fell on them was the size of a big pot of water.
which used to pass through their bodies. The place where their cities were turned upside down, this place is still ocean today.
And there is such an effect in the water of this place that any fish or any animal that goes into this water dies instantly, therefore it is called the Ocean of Death or the Dead Sea. After this incident, the Prophet Lot migrated to the Za'arar city and from here Prophet Lot migrated to Palestine to Prophet Ibrahim. Even after that, Prophet Lot lived for 60 years more.
